Endeca Technologies, Inc., a search applications company, has partnered with strategic investor Intel to fundamentally reengineer aspects of its core technology to natively exploit multi-core computing available with the Intel® Xeon® processor line. The engine in the recently announced McKinley platform News&Events>Press Releases>Final platform release) has been reengineered to build faster, larger scale standards-based search applications. The increasing performance demands of search applications require more computing power than ever and the Intel Xeon hardware is expected to deliver unmatched speed and scale for massive, disparate structured and unstructured data commonly found among Endeca’s public and private sector customers.

“Endeca’s developers have spent the last two years rewriting critical components of its technology in order to natively exploit the multi-core world, rather than running in the classic, single-CPU model,” said Bruce Richardson, Chief Research Officer, AMR Research, in a report entitled "Endeca: New Search Applications and Platform for the Multi-Core World," released on Friday, March 20, 2009. “The increased horsepower means users will have instantaneous access to tens of millions of pieces of heterogeneous data, a term AMR Research’s Jim Murphy uses to refer to structured and unstructured data. The new platform is also twice as fast as the previous version, with Endeca executives hinting that the doubling of speed is only the beginning.”

Endeca’s search applications help people make better decisions by giving them access to any information from anywhere any way they need it by letting users search, sort, filter, and analyze large volumes of diverse and changing data. Search applications complement traditional process applications by enhancing the decision points embedded in processes. Where traditional process applications support pre-determined workflows, search applications allow users to follow their own path through the data to get the perspective they need to make the decision at hand.

A platform to build search applications requires an engine that supports ad hoc queries on diverse and changing information, a way to get the data into the engine and a way to get it out into an application, as well as the necessary tools for both IT and the business to manage the application. The McKinley platform provides these components. In addition, the redesigned engine lays the foundation for continuing improvements in speed, scale and simplicity.

“Only once in a decade do we see advances in the hardware landscape as significant as the new generation of Intel Xeon processors, which fundamentally shift our product scalability onto a steeper curve,” said Adam Ferrari, CTO, Endeca Technologies. “Endeca has re-architected its core software to take advantage of the multi-core and improved memory access characteristics of this new generation of Xeon processors, and we are already seeing performance increases of 150% or more. We expect upcoming processor revisions, combined with our continued work on multi-core optimization to yield order of magnitude scale improvements in key use cases. This means our customers can search and analyze significantly more of their enterprise data on a single server platform, greatly reducing the IT costs associated with maintaining clusters.”

Endeca will feature the McKinley platform at the Intel Intelligent Processors Event at the JW Marriot Hotel in downtown Washington, DC on April 21. This event will highlight Intel's next generation chip architecture and the industry leading organizations, including Endeca, who are incorporating this technology into their products.
